What is Fossil Fueled Fascism?
The fossil fuel industry is the most powerful and destructive industry in the history of the world. The fossil fuel industry is aligning itself with fascist forces to remain profitable. To survive, it is prepared to take the whole planet, as well as liberal democracy, down with it.
Fascism is a far-right political movement promoting an authoritarian state to control all aspects of public and private life. It relies on a dictatorial leadership “at the top” to impose its policies and practices at the expense of the people “at the bottom.”
Today more than ever, fossil fuel industry is funding the rise of fascist leaders across the world.
Fossil Fueled Fascism in the United States
For decades, Big Oil oligarchs are top funders of right wing think tanks such as The Heritage Foundation - author of Project 2025, Americans for Prosperity, ALEC, and the Cato Institute. The Koch Brothers were also direct funders of Citizens United, the nonprofit best known for dismantling US campaign finance protections and paving the way for superPACs - a key avenue enabling the rise of fascism.
Exorbenant fossil fuel political spending is paying off: under the Trump administration, the each fossil fuel industry demand is rapidly being met leading to record profits. In fact, during the first month of the Iran invasion alone, Big Oil made $23 billion in windfall profits!
Fossil Fueled Fascism in California
Between 2015-2026, the fossil fuel industry spent $528 million on California political spending outspending every other sector by 50%. Western States Petroleum Association and Chevron outspent every other company by nearly double during this same period.
The fossil fuel industry is rigging prices and using their increased profit margins in part to buy politicians and defeat much needed climate policy. Taking the pledge is a way for politicians to publicly distance themselves from the fossil fuel industry’s immoral political power, and to help establish a clean norm where fossil fuel industry money does not disproportionately shape public policy.
